So once you're sorted with all the above, it's time to start thinking about hair!! The Hairstyle can be the difference between a Hat looking stunning or not....

We've had many years experience working in a Hat Shop and serving many many ladies (which we loved) so it's all part of the process!

Our absolute favourite Hairsyle is tied back away from the face, which pretty much suits all Hats, Fascinators etc... So

Weddings and Races are a brilliant time to get dressed up (we don't get much chance to do this now right??)

Top Bridal Dress Trends for 2021

Well with many Weddings cancelled in 2020, we are all looking forward to getting some normality back in 2021 and hoping that Weddings will be back in full swing....

I for one have been working very hard behind the Scenes, creating an e-commerce site to make buying easier for the client; but also designing and making my Bridal Headpiece Range for 2021 (something I've wanted to do for ages but never had the time to get organised so covid19 has certainly allowed me this!)

Whilst researching Bridal Trends for 2021 to make sure my Heapieces compliment them, I thought I would put together what I found for all you gorgeous Brides out there......

1. Fabulous Backs and Bows

As far as I'm concerned Bows have never gone out of fashion, but in 2021 they will be key to making a statement; and if you would like to update a dress from 2020 just add a Bow!!

The Back of the dress also will be a huge feature (something I always think looks so classy when the Bride is walking down the aisle) They will become more interesting with a touch of seductiveness!

2. Statement Sleeves

Sleeve detailing can really make the difference to a gown, especially if the gown is a classical, simple design. Bell sleeves or big puffy sleeves are seeing a return this year along with detachable sleeves; which are perfect if you are wearing your gown through to the evening.

3. Modern Lace

Lace becomes more mininalist and modern instead of vintage looking lace (although I absolutely love vintage lace and as I'm designing a vintage inspired range will be including vintage lace - I'm a rebel I know!!)

4. Pastel Shades

Pastel shades are going to be popular with shades of Pinks, Blues and Blush being chosen as the Bridal Gown colour choice. A little bit of rebellion and also Brides wanting to have something a little different !

6. Capes and Cover ups

7. Party Style Sparkle & Romance

And Sparkles and Romance is going to play a bit part in this, gowns may be a simpler style to reflect a smaller more intimate ceremony but thats not going to stop Brides shining!

8. Nec klines & Simple Design

I'ved loved looking at these beautiful Bridal Gowns on a cold winter day in Yorkshire, and it has certainly given me more ideas for my Vintage Inspired 1950's Bridal Range of Headpieces. Tomorrow is a creating day for me and I'm soooo excited to get in my workroom and make some magic.

HISTORY OF MILLINERY

I absolutely love millinery and everthing hats, so I thought I would do some research on the internet and find out a little bit more about the History of Millinery.........
I've always been drawn to vintage fashion and loved rumaging in second hand shops in my youth (when it wasn't fashionable to do so!!) And in those days I got some amazing vintage pieces...... How I wish I'd kept them...
So heres a brief look at millinery in different eras!!

Headwear was worn as early as the Middle Ages (5th to 15th Century) when the Church decided that Ladies should cover their hair and therefore wear a head covering. But it was during the 18th Century that Millinery was established outside of the home and as a profession.

The word Milliner itself comes from the word Milan, the Italian city was where the worlds textile and fashion trade came from. A milliner traditionally is the name given to someone who makes and trims hats for ladies, whereas someone who makes hats for men is known as a hatter.

I've come across Steampunk a few times in my life and I've always been intrigued by it and the outfits that are worn, so I thought I would dig a little bit on the internet and find out what it's all about.

The meaning of steampunk

Steampunk , before it became the full-blown sub-culture it is today, started out as a science-fiction sub-genre in the 1970s. Its fundamental inspirations go all the way back to 19th century Victorian writers, such as Jules Verne (author of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) and H.G. Wells (author of The Time Machine).

Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy featuring advanced machines and other technology based on steam power of the 19th century and taking place in a recognizable historical period or a fantasy world. The term Steampunk was first used in 1987 by K. W. Jeter, the author of the novel Morlock Night. He used the term to describe a genre of speculative fiction in which steam, not electricity, drove technological advancements. Since then it has been used to describe an artistic and cultural movement.

Unlike goth, steampunk originated from literary rather than music culture: it embraces anachronism and science fiction, with reference points including figures such as H G Wells, Mary Shelley, and Jules Verne.

When did steampunk fashion start?

The term steampunk originated in the late 1980s as a tongue-in-cheek variant of cyberpunk.

What do steampunks wear?

Steampunk men can take on a variety of characters. Aesthetics often wear well-ironed suits with vests, top hats and long, straight coats and bear a traditional Victorian appearance. A roguish variation exists, however, often with high leather boots, gloves, and goggles.

Goggles serve many purposes in the world of steampunk such as keeping the wind on an airship from drying out your eyes, protection from dangerous chemicals for the mad scientist, and protection from sparks, and hot steam in the lab or boiler room.

What is a steampunk girl?

Steampunk is a mixture of the Victorian era's romantic view of science in literature and elements from the Industrial Revolution in Europe during the 1800s.

Steampunk fashion consists of clothing, hairstyling, jewelry, body modification and make-up.

I have thoroughly enjoyed investigating this amazing movement (courtesy of Google) and learnt a little bit more about it. GUIDE TO MAKING A FREE FORM SHAPE USING YOUR HAND MADE BLOCK

Guide to making a Free From Shape using your hand made block or polystyrene head..

Handmade block or Polystyrene Head

Spray bottle of water/ Kettle/ Iron

Cotton cloth

Plastic to cover the block

Sinamay of your choice

Dressmaking Pins/Needles

Stiffener and brush

Millinery wire

Cotton to match sinamay colour

When you are ready to begin:

Start by covering your block with plastic

Block your chosen sinamay with the bias running from the top to the bottom (I spray the sinamay with water first, and then use a damp cloth and hot iron to block the sinamay)

then stiffen

When the sinamay is dry, draw your shape on to it , take off the block and cut

Steam the shape lightly and flip the top over so that it curves the other way

Wire the edge with millinery wire using a blanket stitch

Edge with sinamay, either with the same colour or contrasting colour

Your free form shape is now ready!

TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT HEADPIECE FOR YOUR FACESHAPE....

GUIDE TO CHOOSING THE RIGHT HEADPIECE.....

It's not always easy knowing what Hat you should choose for your face shape.... It can be a mine field trawling round shops and trying on endless hats! Well with a little bit of knowledge you can be prepared before you head out to Town.....

FACE SHAPES

LONG FACE - you want to shorten your face by wearing something that gives your face width, for example a shallow crowned hat with a large brim or a disc wide enough to give width but no wider than shoulders.

HEART - a heart shaped face has a wider forehead and narrower jawline, medium brims and a-symmetric brims help to give width to the jawline, pillboxes are also a good style for this face shape.

OVAL - If you're lucky enough to have an oval face (which is classed as the perfect face shape, I knew my Beauty Therapy training would come in useful!!)

You are lucky enough to pretty much suit what ever Headpiece you like...... So get trying away with confidence.

SMALL FACE - you do not want to look like the hat is wearing you, so go for a hat that is in proportion with your face and height.

CONSIDER:

Finally, your Headpiece should reflect your personality and normal style, so if your style is eclectic, then go for a headpiece that reflects this and most importantly HAVE FUN!

Decide on your outfit first, that includes shoes and bag.

The Headpiece needs to compliment the whole outfit, nature of the event, what part you play in the occasion.

Hair is a consideration and you can experiment with how you would like it, depending on what Headpiece you choose; but generally the Headpiece looks better if the hair is tied back and out of the way.

If your hair is long, a neat pony tail or low bun to one side looks very elegant.
